Help keep your alleys clean

Alleys are an important resource in the City of Tempe. They provide a point of access for first responders and are vital to your solid waste disposal. However, when alleys are not properly maintained, they may become a detriment to those around them. Alleys in poor condition tend to have more incidents of illegal dumping and crime, increased problems with pests and infestations and are more hazardous for vehicles and pedestrians.

The Alley Revitalization Project is part of Tempe's commitment to protecting residents' health, safety, and security. Tempe's Community Enhancement Division will be working to raise awareness on the importance of alley maintenance and will be in close communication with residents to address localized issues.

Tips for keeping your alley clean and safe

Stay healthy

Junk, trash, and debris in the alley can invite unwanted pests and infestations. These pests can harbor diseases that pose a health risk to the public. Do your part to mitigate these risks by keeping unnecessary items out of your portion of the alley.

Stay safe

Obstructions may block access to the alley, and can create a hazard for passing vehicles. It is important to keep the alleys clear so that first responders, solid waste, and utility workers can provide services without interruption. Make sure to keep bulk pickup items close to your fence, and away from the center of the alley.

Stay secure

Crime is more common in alleyways that appear neglected. Studies have shown that regular property maintenance can be a powerful deterrent against illegal dumping, vandalism, and other forms of criminal activity. Help keep your alleys secure by keeping the areas behind your home maintained.

Keep in code

Property owners are required to maintain the alleys behind their homes and businesses up to the center line of the alley. Read more below to find out how you can keep in code and keep your part of the alley clean.
