How to recycle textiles

While clothing and household goods are not allowed in your blue recycling container, these items can be donated in one of six containers across Tempe. The donation containers are white and are labeled "Donations" at the top of the container.

The containers are serviced by Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona, which was awarded a contract to reuse and recycle textiles and household items through the city’s procurement process. This program has been immensely popular with residents and helps advance Council-adopted Performance Measure 4.04.

Acceptable items include:

  • bed sheets/pillow cases
  • belts
  • blankets
  • clothing
  • cloth tablecloths
  • cloth shopping bags
  • curtains
  • fabric scraps
  • gently used home decor
  • gently used toys
  • hats
  • purses
  • shoes
  • stuffed animals
  • towels

All items must be dry and free of mold, dirt and grease. Tears and rips in clothing and linen are acceptable only in the textile and household goods recycling program. However, stuffed animals and cloth toys must be in reusable condition. Whenever possible, keep paired shoes together by binding or tying the shoelaces. Ceramic or glass items are not accepted. Do not leave items on the ground and place items gently into the container that may break.

** Items must be able to fit in the container opening and should be no more than one-foot high by two-feet wide. **
