The City of Chandler has kicked-off the design for the “Kyrene Branch & Highline Canal Shared Use Path Projects”. This project’s intent is to continue the Kyrene Canal Path (which currently ends within the City of Tempe at Kyrene Road), south, into the City of Chandler.

As part of this project, the City of Tempe has been coordinating with the City of Chandler on improvements within Tempe which will include sidewalk widening along Kyrene Road from 8’ to 10’ (for approx. 500’) and a mid-block pedestrian signal across Kyrene Rd to connect the path entrances on both sides of the street.  This proposed mid-block pedestrian signal will be located approximately 100’ north of southern most Knox Road in Tempe. Beyond the above Kyrene Road improvements, there are no additional changes to the existing path or roadways within the City of Tempe.

The intent of the improvements within the City of Tempe are to facilitate a direct signalized crossing for bicyclists/pedestrians across the 45-mph Kyrene Road; connecting the new City of Chandler path improvements with the existing City of Tempe path improvements.

The proposed pedestrian signal will only be active when a bicyclist or pedestrian pushes the signal button. A nearby example of a similar pedestrian signal can be seen at Kyrene Canal and Elliot Road. Although Kyrene Canal and Elliot Road is a modular pole, a tapered pole is also being explored for this location.

The City of Chandler anticipates that the project’s design will be completed late 2024, with construction beginning Summer 2025. Additional neighborhood notifications will be sent out prior to construction as soon as a schedule becomes available.
