Keep fat, oil and grease out of your drains during the holidays
As we gather with our families and friends over the holidays to enjoy the delicious food associated with this time of year, please remember that grease and oils poured down the drain is one of the leading causes of backups and sanitary sewer overflows, and can have disastrous consequences.
To prevent these backups and overflows from occurring in the wastewater collection system, here are a few tips for disposing of leftover cooking fat, oil and grease:
- Place fat, oil and grease in a container with a tight-sealing lid, or in a lidded container with an absorbent material such as coffee grounds or cat litter, and dispose of in the garbage.
- Before soaking a greasy pan, first pour grease into a container and wipe the pan with paper towels and dispose of in the garbage.
- If using a deep fryer, solidify the grease by mixing it with an absorbent material and dispose of in the garbage.
- Recycle leftover fat, oil and grease at the Household Products Collection Center, located at 1320 E. University Dr., beginning in late November and continuing through early January.
Help maintain Tempe’s wastewater collection and treatment system, and the environment, by disposing of your leftover holiday fat, oil and grease properly.
