Affordable housing, social services for vets
Valor on Eighth is a 50-unit affordable housing community that serves veterans and their families. It is the first development of its kind in Arizona.
Located on what once was city-owned land near Rural Road and Eighth Street, Valor is a collaboration between the City of Tempe and co-developers Gorman & Company, Inc., and the nonprofit Save the Family Foundation of Arizona.
The City of Tempe is dedicated to serving veterans through a wide range of efforts and initiatives.
“Tempe values are about families and community, and when someone is in need we work to tailor services around their circumstances,” said former Councilmember Robin Arredondo-Savage, a U.S. Army veteran. “Valor on Eighth is unique. It’s a bright and welcoming place that embraces veterans who need a family-oriented environment and that contributes to our community’s quality of life."
The community, opened in 2018, was designed with veterans in mind. Valor offers:
- A wide range of wraparound services such as job training and financial literacy education, offered through Save the Family’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program.
- Welcoming community spaces throughout the property, including a game room, playground and outdoor seating.
- Convenient access to nearby Arizona State University, local restaurants and shops, and other city amenities using public transit and other options.

Place to call home: Valor gives veteran a fresh start
At the young age of 17, Romaldo “Ro” Gonzalez felt the call to serve his country. He joined the Marine Corps and set off on a six-year adventure traveling the world. Gonzalez’s time in the service was like none other and today the veteran is back among what he thinks of as a “brotherhood and sisterhood” as a resident at Tempe’s Valor on Eighth.
