The U.S. Postal Service has created a new zip code in northern Tempe, 85288, due to rapid growth in the area. The new zip code affects about 13,000 residents and businesses between approximately 56^th Street and the Loop 101 and University Drive and Roosevelt Street.

The change takes effect July 1, 2022 but mail with the old zip code will still be delivered for a year. All postal customers affected by these changes were notified in June 2022.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to start taking steps now to update billing addresses as well as mailing addresses for voter registration, driver licenses and other vital documents.

The change was made by the U.S. Postal Service, not the City of Tempe. Read the Postal Service news release here.

If your current address is not on file, you may not receive renewal notices or other correspondence concerning your driver license or vehicle records. You may be cited by law enforcement if you do not change your address within the 10 days.

Reason for new zip code

According the Postal Service, the new zip code became necessary due to the rapid growth in the Tempe area and allows for the addition of new delivery routes and new addresses in the area. The new zip code will help the Postal Services sort, ship and deliver mail more efficiently.

The new zip code will provide additional room for growth in the community and effective mail delivery for years to come.
