Completed in March 2016, the goal of the Broadway Road Streetscape Project was to recharacterize the portion of Broadway Road between Mill Avenue and Rural Road. The project added bicycle lanes, wider sidewalks and street trees on the south side of the road, landscaped median islands and a buffer/wall treatment on the north side of Broadway Road. In addition, one eastbound traffic lane was removed. The lane was temporarily barricaded off from Sept. 16 to Sept. 30, 2013 to conduct a simulation of the conditions identified in the preferred roadway design concept. During the simulation, traffic counts were taken on Broadway Road from Mill Avenue to Rural Road along with gathering traffic counts and speeds along adjacent neighborhood streets like College, Encanto, Dateland and Alameda. 

Laurie Lundquist and Rebecca Ross were selected as the artists for the project. The art was integrated into the wall treatment on the north side of Broadway Road and was funded through the Municipal Arts Fund.   

Funding 
Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program federal funds totaling $3.857 million were secured for the design and construction of the project. As part of the CMAQ requirements, local matching dollars are required. As such, an additional 5.7% match in Tempe transit funds is budgeted for the project.

The Broadway Road Action Team PDF comprised of 14 stakeholders who live or own property in the project area. Action Team members represented a geographically equitable distribution of stakeholders with a diversity of opinions related to the project and include a representative of the neighborhood association(s).
