Tempe proactively identifies potential locations that could benefit from the implementation of traffic safety measures. Roundabouts are circular intersections that move traffic counterclockwise around a center island, and are used nationwide because of their proven safety benefits and reduced maintenance costs. They also have sustainability benefits since they do not require electricity and don’t require ongoing maintenance of equipment and can include landscaping, shade and water harvesting.

McKellips Road and College Avenue

The intersection of College Avenue and McKellips Road is currently controlled by a traffic signal. City staff  met with nearby neighbors and received feedback from residents requesting traffic calming on College Avenue. One solution is the construction of a roundabout as an alternative to the existing traffic signal.

In August of 2018, the City of Tempe gathered feedback on a proposed roundabout at the intersection. Funding is now available for completing the design with construction anticipated to be funded in Fiscal Year 2025/2026. The roundabout will replace the existing traffic signal.
