Community gardens bring the surrounding population together by offering a shared space for individuals to come together and work toward a common goal through gardening, landscaping, and food sustainability education. Community gardens offer fresh produce, physical activity, recreation, and civic pride to those who participate. Check out this calendar of events for info on learning, volunteering and more!

These gardens also serve an important purpose providing the community with access to locally grown food, educational opportunities, and allowing for economic development.

Escalante Community Garden

Through the Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) the Escalante Community Garden has been able to flourish. The garden grows organic produce to give back to the volunteers who work two hours a week in the garden and the TCAA Food Pantry. Escalante Community Garden offers volunteer garden work days, a communal space for families and children to become educated about healthy eating and nutrition, gardening and cooking demonstrations, and gives seniors and local neighbors an area to socialize and work together. The garden features a children’s area along with a desert and herb garden. Escalante Community Garden is also recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

Clark Park Community Garden

A collaborative effort of the Clark Park and Marilyn Ann Neighborhood Associations, and Keep Tempe Beautiful. The garden was created in 2014 at the site of a former municipal pool. The garden includes community growing areas as well as fruit trees and 27 raised boxes available for rent to the community. Two aquaponics gardens, an aeroponic Tower Garden growing system and a Xeric garden are also housed within the community garden. Clark Park also offers various events such as garden volunteer work days and Tuesday sunset activities aimed to provide recreation to local neighbors and volunteers.

Friendship Evergreen Community Garden is a joint pursuit by the City of Tempe, Friendship Village, and Tempe Neighborhood of Evergreen. The proposed community garden space occupies approximately 39,860 square feet in an area adjacent to Friendship Village’s south wall. The garden is open to neighbors, children, and anyone new to gardening. Friendship Evergreen Community Garden offers a communal space for all to enjoy by offering garden volunteer work days, and community beautification by incorporating mural art into their garden design. The community garden is also home to many pollinators and is established for plant donation for visitors to take home with them.

Foxtail Community Garden

Foxtail Community Garden consists of involvement from ASU students, local neighbors, garden enthusiasts, and anyone who is passionate about community, food sustainability, and biodiversity in urban areas. The garden offers opportunities of involvement consisting of a “Garden Gnome Community” offering plot availability for planting, a garden book club, volunteer garden workdays, and “The Garden Stand” offering free seeds, plants, and gardening supplies. Through the years, the vacant lot turned community garden has become an area promoting ecotheology, educational teachings related to urban agriculture, and a sense of community.

FIGG Community Garden

FIGG Community Garden consists of involvement from children a part of the YMCA, Scouts, and public schools for educational purposes as well as contributions from local neighbors in the community. The garden offers educational programs for children and is dedicated to making garden produce donations to Tempe Community Action Agency’s food pantry and the Kyrene Family Resource Center. FIGG has a mission to serve its community and educate others about organic gardening and sustainability.

Tiger Mountain Foundation uses its community garden (MAC 6) to help empower the community through the use of its garden. Tiger Mountain Community Garden aims to encourage kids, adults, and seniors to improve themselves and their community by motivating work through gardening and landscaping initiatives. Their mission is to foster a better community by offering community garden volunteer work, internships, and paid incentive participation by working with challenged populations facing high rates of incarceration and a low ranking educational system. Tiger Mountain Foundation utilizes its garden to build self-sufficiency, resilience, and creativity within those in the community.
