Electric vehicles are a critical part of Tempe's clean-energy future and a key element in the 2019 Climate Action Plan. Tempe is committed to increasing the use of electric vehicles in municipal operations and making them more accessible to the public. To achieve cleaner air and reduce the effects of climate change, we must move away from gasoline, and towards electric.
In 2020, transportation and mobile sources made up 45% of Tempe's green house gas emissions. Between Tempe residents and workers, there are at least 224,000 vehicles that travel within the community daily, emitting 1,239,048 MT CO2e. The number of various electric vehicles are rapidly multiplying, and it is increasing likely that electric vehicles will capture a significant share of the new car sales in the coming years, with some projections pointing to the end of sales of combustion passenger vehicles occurring by the mid-2030s.
Tempe will lead by example by investing in electric vehicles for our city fleet and facilitating the transition to EV by ensuring there is adequate charging infrastructure in our community. Find out how below!
