The Strategic Management and Innovation Office administers three signature City surveys with an independent contractor to ensure anonymity. Results are presented to the City Council, employees and community in November as part of the kick-off to the annual budget process.

Survey Dashboards
The survey dashboard offers viewers an interactive way to engage with the survey data through cross tabulations, trends, key demographics of respondents, investment priorities, as well as mapping results and benchmarking.

Community Survey
The Tempe Community Survey serves as a tool to assist the City Council and city staff in setting priorities, dedicating resources and establishing goals to improve service. The City values how residents feel about the quality of everything from facilities and programs to events and services. The community survey is conducted annually.

Business Survey
The Tempe Business Survey is utilized to measure and improve the City's performance in supporting our business community. Along with the Tempe Community Survey, the business data influences decisions about projects, programs and services that support our business community. The business survey is conducted every other year.

Employee Survey
The Tempe Employee Survey is administered to City of Tempe employees and volunteers. The survey provides data and areas of focus for employee engagement and is conducted every other year.

Tempe Forum
Tempe Forum is an online, town hall-style place for civic engagement. Read what others are saying about important Tempe topics, then post your own statement. City officials will read the statements and incorporate them into their decision processes, if applicable. Valley Benchmark Communities
Valley Benchmark Communities (VBC) is a group of 14 Arizona municipalities working to improve local government performance. VBC is one of the largest and oldest performance management consortiums in the U.S. and covers a population of over 4 million in the Phoenix metro area. VBC, by working collaboratively with designated representatives from local governments and their communities:
- Identifies common demographic, financial, and performance information.
- Uses this information to better understand the similarities, differences, and complexities of community operations.
- Openly shares best practices, data, and other resources

Tempe Population Projection Data and Tempe Union High School District Governing Board's Demographic and Enrollment Update
To provide population projection information inclusive of demographic details to guide future planning, Mary Mezey, Strategic Initiatives Manager, collaborated with Maricopa Association of Governments’ (MAG) Regional Analytics team to determine population projections for 2020-2060. Staff then conducted analysis of the data.
Additionally, the "Demographic and Enrollment Update” was presented to the Tempe Union High School District Governing Board on April 17, 2024. The proprietary data analytics was presented by the District’s consultants from Applied Economics.
