Internship (Volunteer) Application
Crime Analysis and Intelligence Center (CAIC) Internships
CAIC Tactical and Intelligence Analysis Internship Responsibilities
Interns will assist the Tactical and Intel Analysts by performing the following tasks, including:
- Using record management software to read police reports and street checks
- Using analysis software to identify crime trends, patterns, series, hot spots, and suspicious people and activity
- Recognizing similarities in offender description, modus operandi and target location
- Using mapping software to produce crime maps
- Interacting with patrol officers, detectives and other analysts to exchange information regarding ongoing crime trends
- Assisting in the creation of crime bulletins
CAIC Interns will also have the chance to
- Participate in ride-alongs with dispatch and patrol
- Attend meetings involving other crime analysts
- Interview a member of the Tempe Police Department
Computer Software
Internship applicants are expected to have a basic understanding of how to operate a computer. Some of the software that will be utilized for analysis includes:- Microsoft Office – in particular Outlook, Word and Excel
- ArcGIS mapping software
- ATAC (Automated Tactical Analysis of Crime) – our database for analysis of crime reports
Qualifications
Those interested in applying for the internship should be at least an upper-division college student with an educational background in Justice Studies, Criminal Justice, Sociology Political Science, GIS (Geographic Information System), or other social science. Interns are expected to be available at least fifteen (15) hours a week.
This is an unpaid internship; however, interns may receive college credit upon completion of the internship. The number of credits available, as well as the number of hours required, depends on your school. Please contact your academic adviser for more information on receiving credit for an internship.

CAIC Strategic and Administrative Analysis Internship Responsibilities
Interns will assist Research and Data Analysts by performing the following tasks, including:
- Use computer databases, electronic spreadsheets, desktop publishing, word processing, and statistical applications to manipulate, analyze, and present data.
- Use analysis software to enter, clean, and conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of police data.
- Interact with patrol officers, detectives and other analysts to research criminal activity in Tempe.
- Use mapping software to produce crime maps.
- Assist in the creation of monthly bulletins and reports for Police Department dissemination.
Interns will gain proficiency in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Programs (including Excel, Word, and Outlook), Tableau, SPSS, ArcGIS and other software programs specific to the Tempe Police Department. Additionally, this is an excellent opportunity to:

Qualifications
Interns are expected to be available at least eight hours during a normal work week (i.e. between Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Applicants for this internship should have well developed analytical skills. It is preferred that applicants have a background in research and have taken undergraduate courses in research methods and statistics. Experience with GIS is a plus!
