Exhibit Overview
Tempe newspaper photographer Jan Young spent the 1970s taking photographs for the Tempe Daily News. In 2001 she donated 7500 of her negatives to the permanent collection of the Tempe History Museum. These images were the basis for the exhibit Jan Young: Photographing Tempe in the 1970s at Tempe History Museum. Because she was photographing the daily events of Tempe for the local newspaper, her images capture the look, feel, and values of the community during that decade.

Jan Young was a quirky local character, who is remembered for always wearing a trench coat and driving a Volkswagen Beetle. At a time when most newspaper photographers would use an entire roll of film to photograph a subject, she earned the nickname “One Shot Jan” for her habit of taking a single photograph of a scene.

Exhibit Highlights
Visitors to the exhibit were able to see many examples of Jan Young’s photographs from the 1970s, as well as displayed artifacts from her life and a work.
