Exhibit Overview
To create this changing exhibit, Tempe History Museum sent out photographers to gather short interviews and informal portraits of random folks on the streets of Tempe. Humans of Tempe was loosely based on the very popular Humans of New York website, Facebook page and books.

With the combined informal portraits and short quotes or stories, visitors could connect with real, ordinary people and learn about people different than themselves.

Each photo and caption provided a small glimpse into the psyche, problems, adventures, worries and dreams of some of the humans of Tempe. These portraits and stories reminded us that we are all human – our problems may not be that bad, or that we are not alone, or that others share the same joy and pain.

A looping video in the exhibit gallery showed how the photographers gathered their portraits and interviews.

Visitors walked away with renewed empathy, realizing that there is no “us” versus “them” – only “we;” that most people are decent, compassionate, loving and wonderful.
