Project Overview:
The city’s planned improvements to Waggoner Park continue to move forward and will include new playground equipment with rubberized surfacing, a ramada, accessible walkways, new lighting and trees. Fitness equipment will be installed in Waggoner Park West. The city’s project is currently under design with anticipated construction as early as the summer of 2025.
The improvements are partially funded out of the city’s Capital Improvement Program budget, as part of the Parks Improvement Plan, which is reinvesting more than $60 million into Tempe parks over the next five years . Additional modifications or enhancements to other park amenities are not included in the budgeted amount.
The City of Tempe and Kyrene School District continue to work together on safety and security measures for the school. In order to secure the school, the Kyrene School District will install fencing along the sidewalk between the school and the park and build new play facilities on their property in the summer of 2025. The school previously installed a playground and basketball courts on the east side of Waggoner Park and used these amenities for school activities. After the school district installs the fence and new play facilities, Waggoner Park East will be outside the fence line and the park will not be used by the school, thus allowing for full time use of the park by the community during park hours.
