Tempe Town Lake Junior Rowing 2024-2025
The Tempe Town Lake Junior Rowing Program has been operating on Tempe Town Lake since 2005 with athletes traveling around the country to compete at a national level. This team is open to boys and girls ages 12-18 from all over the valley. The team is represented by many of the local schools and the athletes come together to race as one. There is no experience necessary! Every year new athletes join to become rowers and increase their opportunities to earn a college scholarship. We have sent many athletes to college rowing programs across the country.
The Tempe Town Lake Juniors practice from 4 - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, September through May and from 6:30 - 8:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday Friday in June and July. Please understand that even though this is a club, we conduct our program with the same rules and expectations of a varsity high school sport. We accept athletes throughout the year and also have a novice program that runs either two days a week or three days a week during the spring and fall. Please contact the Emily at emily_burkett@tempe.gov if you have any other questions about the team.
With our home water on Tempe Town Lake we are afforded year round rowing and training. These athletes prepare for regattas up and down the west coast. Join us for this life-changing opportunity on Tempe Town Lake.
Junior Learn to Row
We usually run one dedicated Learn to Row in January and one in September. These Learn to Rows are one day classes to give new athletes a chance to find out if rowing is for them and learn the basics before they join the team. For those wishing to continue to Junior Rowing or Novice Junior Rowing, a float test will need to be scheduled with the boating office. If you've missed the scheduled learn to row for the season please contact Emily at emily_burkett@tempe.gov to arrange a drop in.

Junior Rowing – Novice
The novice program is for participants aged 12-18. It is for rowers who are new to the sport or who may not be interested in making a large time commitment. We will be working up to a point where athletes may be able to compete with varsity rowers. Prerequisite: Junior Learn to Row is recommended, but not required.

Float Test
All rowing participants must complete a 10-minute float test and watch a U.S. Rowing Safety Video. If there is enough interest each season, we will coordinate one at the Kiwanis Recreation Center. If you have rowing experience but are new to the City of Tempe Rowing Program, you must fulfill this requirement. For additional information, please contact the Emily at emily_burkett@tempe.gov.
