Tempe Experience Corps
The City of Tempe’s AARP Foundation Experience Corps program is a local program partner of the national AARP Foundation Experience Corps. Tempe's program focuses on early literacy skills and is designed to provide reading support to students in partnership with the Tempe and Kyrene Elementary School Districts.
AARP Foundation Experience Corps volunteers have helped more than 3,000 students reach grade-level reading benchmarks since the city’s program was established in 2006. Due to its longtime success, the Tempe program now serves as the national model.
Through the program:
- Students in first through third grade who test below their grade level reading benchmarks standards receive one-on-one tutoring twice a week during the school year.
- Adults 50+ are engaged to help children become proficient readers by the time they finish third grade.
- Students strengthen academic skills and also show increased self-confidence.
- The generational exchange allows children to succeed and adult tutors to thrive, making communities stronger.
The effectiveness of the program is measured by student reading scores as well as surveys of teachers, principals and volunteers.
