Preventing and Reducing Opioid Abuse

Opioid addiction is a national problem. Tempe is committed to reducing opioid addiction in our community through compassionate programs, services, science and data. Tempe has a performance measure dedicated to it.

Opioids are a class of drugs that includes medications that are legally prescribed for pain relief such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, and morphine as well as synthetic opioids like fentanyl and illegal drugs such as heroin. All opioids are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain.
