The Plan’s land use and residential density map envisions a Tempe in 2050 where access to diverse and sustainable housing types are prioritized, neighborhoods are the focus of service enhancements and close to commercial activity, and intensified land uses are located near transit lines and open spaces.

Land use refers to how different areas are used, and density is the number of homes that can be built. They guide future development and infrastructure and help plan for projected population and employment growth.

Tempe Tomorrow – General Plan 2050 has six guiding principles that drive the plan, including land use and density:

  • A Balanced Land Use
  • Enhanced Quality of Life & Stable Neighborhoods
  • Increased Economic Vitality
  • Sustained Mobility/Greater Accessibility
  • Sustainability, Climate Friendliness and Environmental Stewardship
  • Housing Affordability, Access, and Diversity of Types
