Greg Ruiz was recently promoted to Interim Tempe Chief Deputy City Manager in July 2024, supervising the areas of the Police Department, Fire Department, and Community Health and Human Services. Prior to his most recent appointment Chief Ruiz served as the Deputy City Manager for one year. Greg has over 34 years of fire service, 29 of which were served with the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department with 11 as Fire Chief.
While working his way through the ranks of the service, he acquired his Bachelor’s in Public Administration from Grand Canyon University and his Master’s in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.
Greg is a graduate of Tempe Leadership class XXII and the Homeland Security Executive Leaders Program (ELP) at the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security and Executive Fire Officer Program. He is a Certified Public Manager from the Advanced Public Executive Program at Arizona State University. He also has an extensive instructor background, teaching for local community colleges in the areas of emergency medicine and fire science for thirty years.
His professional memberships include the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Arizona Fire Chiefs Association. Greg has volunteered time in the past as a Valley Big Brother for Big Brother Big Sisters of Central Arizona.
