Event Street Closures & Restrictions

Below is information about any special events in Tempe that cause street restrictions or bus detours. Only current events affecting a street or bus route will be posted. Click here to view all Valley Metro bus detours. Click here for multi-use path closures.

ASU Homecoming

  • Date: 11/23/2024  (all day)

Several downtown Tempe streets will be closed or restricted for the ASU Homecoming Block Party and Football Game Nov. 23. The following street restrictions and closures have been identified; however, others could be put in place to address public safety concerns that occur during the event.

Nov. 22 beginning at 7 p.m. until Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.:

  • University Drive will be closed in both directions between College and Veteran’s Way.
  • Tenth Street will be closed in both directions east of Mill Avenue.
  • Myrtle Avenue will be closed in both directions south of University Drive.

Nov. 22 beginning at 10 p.m. until Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.:

  • McAllister Avenue will be closed in both directions between Apache Boulevard and University Drive.
  • University Drive will be closed in both directions between Mill Avenue and Rural Road.
  • Tenth Street will be closed in both directions east of Mill Avenue.
  • Myrtle Avenue will be closed in both directions south of University Drive.
  • Myrtle, Forest, College, McAllister avenues and Veterans Way will be closed in both directions at University Drive.
  • Lemon Street will be closed in both directions at McAllister Avenue. 

Nov. 23 beginning at 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.:

  • Veterans Way will be closed in both directions between Sixth Street and College Avenue. 
  • Westbound Rio Salado Parkway will be closed at McClintock Drive.

Nov. 23 beginning at 11 a.m. until one hour after game ends:

  • Eastbound Rio Salado Parkway will be closed between Ash and Mill avenues.
  • Tenth Street closed in both directions at Mill Avenue (local traffic permitted).
  • Motorists heading eastbound on University Drive will be required to turn southbound onto Mill Avenue. 
  • Right hand turns will be prohibited from westbound University Drive to northbound Mill Avenue.
  • Left hand turns will be prohibited from southbound Mill Avenue to eastbound University Drive.

Nov. 23 from the start of the third quarter until one hour after game ends:

  • Southbound Scottsdale Road/Rural Road closed between Curry Road and Rio Salado Parkway
  • Eastbound Gilbert Drive closed between Scottsdale Road and College Avenue
  • Westbound Rio Salado Parkway closed between Karsten Golf Course and McClintock Drive
  • Westbound University Drive closed between Rural Road and McClintock Drive
  • Northbound Rural Road closed between Rio Salado Parkway and University Drive
  • Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets closed in both directions between Forest and College avenues
  • College Avenue closed in both directions between Sixth Street and Veterans Way/Fifth Street
  • McAllister Drive closed in both directions between University Drive and Terrace Road
  • Westbound and eastbound SR202 off-ramps onto Scottsdale Road will be closed.

 Transit Detours

The following bus detours have been identified; however, others could be put in place to address public safety concerns that occur during the event.

Nov. 22, beginning at 7 p.m. until Nov. 23 end of service:

  • 30 Eastbound: Regular route to University Drive/Mill Avenue; south on Mill Avenue to Apache Blvd.; east on Apache Blvd. to Rural Road; north on Rural Road to University Drive; east on University Drive to resume regular route.
  • 30 Westbound: Regular route to University Drive/McClintock Drive; south on McClintock Drive to Apache Blvd.; west on Apache Blvd. to Mill Avenue; north on Mill Avenue to University Drive; west on University Drive to resume regular route.
  • 48 Northbound: Regular route to Tempe Transportation Center; west on Fifth Street to Mill Avenue; north on Mill Avenue to Rio Salado Parkway; east on Rio Salado Parkway to Packard Drive; resume regular route.
  • 48 Southbound: Regular route to McClintock Drive/Rio Salado Parkway; south on McClintock Drive to Apache Blvd.; west on Apache Blvd. to Mill Avenue; north on Mill Avenue to Fifth St.; east on Fifth Street to Tempe Transportation Center; resume regular route.
  • 62 Northbound: Regular route to Tempe Transportation Center; west on Fifth Street to Mill Avenue; south on Mill Avenue to Apache Blvd.; east on Apache Blvd. to Rural Road; north on Rural Road to University Drive; east on University Drive to resume regular route.
  • 62 Southbound: Regular route to University Drive/McClintock Drive; south on McClintock Drive to Apache Blvd.; west on Apache Blvd. to Mill Avenue; north on Mill Avenue to Fifth St.; east on Fifth Street to Tempe Transportation Center; resume regular route.
  • Mars Northbound: Regular route to Terrace Road/Rural Road; south on Rural Road to Apache Blvd.; west on Apache Blvd. to Mill Avenue; north on Mill Avenue to Fifth St.; east on Fifth Street to Tempe Transportation Center
  • Mars Southbound: From Tempe Transportation Center – west on Fifth Street to Mill Avenue; south on Mill Avenue to Apache Blvd.; east on Apache Blvd. to Rural Road; north on Rural Road to Terrace Road; east on Terrace Road to resume regular route.
  • Mercury Eastbound: Regular route to Mill Avenue/University Drive; south on Mill Avenue to Apache Blvd.; east on Apache Blvd. to Rural Road; north on Rural Road to Terrace Road; east on Terrace Road to resume regular route.
  • Mercury Westbound: Regular route to Terrace Road/Rural Road; south on Rural Road to Apache Blvd.; west on Apache Blvd. to Mill Avenue; north on Mill Avenue to Fifth St.; east on Fifth Street to Tempe Transportation Center
  • Venus Forward: From Tempe Transportation Center – west on Fifth Street to Mill Avenue; south on Mill Avenue to University Drive; resume regular route.
  • Venus Back: Regular route to Mill Avenue/University Drive; north on Mill Avenue to Fifth St.; east on Fifth Street to Tempe Transportation Center.

Nov. 23 beginning during the third quarter until approximately one hour after the game ends:

  • 72 Northbound: Regular route to Rural Road/University Drive; east on University Drive to McClintock Drive; north on McClintock Drive to Curry Road; west on Curry Road to Rural Road; north on Rural Road to resume regular route.
  • 72 Southbound: Regular route to Rural Road/Curry Road; west on Curry Road to Mill Avenue; south on Mill Avenue to Apache Blvd.; east on Apache Blvd. to Rural Road; south on Rural Road to resume regular route.
  • Earth Westbound: Regular route to College Avenue/Curry Road; west on Curry Road to Mill Avenue; south on Mill Avenue to Rio Salado Parkway; resume regular route.

  • Full closures of arterial or collector streets.
