Water service line inventory

In a nationwide effort to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that all water providers take an inventory of water service lines and make it publicly available by Oct. 16, 2024. This national effort is part of the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revision regulation, or LCRR.

Tempe’s water service line inventory project is part of LCRR and began in 2021. Currently, Tempe is performing inspections throughout the city for the inventory project. This webpage explains project specifics and their impact to you.

What you need to know

  • Tempe’s water is safe to drink and remains in compliance with all federal drinking water regulations. Providing safe drinking water is an essential service and responsibility which Tempe takes very seriously.

  • To date, the city has not found any lead water service lines in Tempe’s water system. There is no history of lead water service lines used in construction in Tempe and the city has no expectation of finding lead water service lines.

  • Currently, Tempe is performing inspections for the inventory throughout the city. The inspections are performed outside and involve visual verification of service line material near the water meter and the hose bib where water enters the home. Results of the inspection will be delivered on a doorhanger—no action is needed from Tempe water customers; however, contractors may request some residents relocate vehicles in order to perform the inspection. If your service line has not been physically inspected yet, you may receive a letter identifying your lines as “unknown.”

  • You can see the city’s inventory progress and look up your service line material here or using the button below. Call Tempe 311 at 480-350-4311 for assistance navigating the online inventory.

  • In the unlikely event that you have a lead or galvanized service line, Tempe will notify you via doorhanger and follow up. Tempe will work with you individually on your options for replacement and funding.
