Highly successful applicants possess several of the following characteristics:
- Multi-Tasking: The ability to answer a 911 call, and enter information into the computer, dispatch an officer and continue to provide updates all at the same time.
- Critical Thinking: The ability to apply reason and common sense to situations and anticipate potential problems.
- Problem Solving: Finding creative solutions to problems to assist both officers and citizens.
- Good Listener: The ability to listen objectively, without judgement, and understand direction both during non-emergency and emergency situations.
- Adaptability: The ability to adjust to changes in operations, shifts, equipment, policies, and procedures on short notice.
- Map Reading: The ability to read, understand, interpret, and convey directional information.
