The Tempe Police Department recognizes there are those in our community who struggle with mental health, homelessness, drug addiction and conditions such as dementia. It is becoming more common for our officers to have contact with persons who are in crisis; whether through a concerned citizen call for service or as part of our normal routine patrols.   
 
The Tempe Police Department has identified these areas as a way to strengthen our training and assist our officers find a way to better understand, de-escalate, listen and communicate with subjects who are experiencing these difficult life-altering situations.
