"Operation Slow Down" Recap

Post Date:05/08/2024

TEMPE, ARIZ. –  The City of Tempe Police Department conducted “Operation Slow Down” from January 15, 2024 to March 31, 2024.  The focus of the operation was to reduce serious injury and fatal collisions along Rural Rd from Warner Rd to McKellips Rd.  The operation was multi-faceted with a strong emphasis on community education and traffic enforcement.

In a comparison for the same dates in 2023, officers more than tripled the number of traffic stops in the area resulting in opportunities for education and enforcement.  In addition, officers more than doubled the number of citations issued in order to correct unsafe driving behaviors.

As a result of this multi-faceted approach in our focus area, there were no fatal traffic collisions, and most importantly, we were able to reduce total traffic collisions by nearly 50%.

The City of Tempe Police Department, along with the City of Tempe are dedicated to continuing these efforts in order to ensure our community and those that travel through it, are able to do as safely as possible.

"During Operation Slow Down, our Tempe police officers have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing community safety through targeted traffic enforcement and education. We will continue to attain our goal to instill a sense of responsibility while promoting safe driving behaviors."

-Chief Kenneth McCoy
