Approved Bus, Express and METRO Light Rail Service Changes for July 26

Decision making process for July 26 bus service changes included:

  • Impacts to public access, system efficiency, route and mode integration, operating performance, consistency of services, budget savings/revenue, and ridership
  • Consideration of public feedback on funding priorities as well as individual comments
  • Recommendation to Citizen Advisory Transportation Commission – June 8 @ 7:30 a.m. 200 E. Fifth Street
  • Presentation to Council Transportation Committee  –  June 15 @ 3 p.m. at 31 E. Fifth Street, 3rd floor
  • Approval of Tempe City Council –  June 24 @ 6 p.m. at 31 E. Fifth Street, Council Chambers

Tempe Transit Services & Potential Impacts:

Passengers and residents were able to comment online about  Round 1 proposals from Feb. 22 through March 7.  Public meetings for Round 1 were held Feb. 23 and March 1. Round 2 proposals were available for comment from March 29 through April 13. Round 2 proposals were based in part on feedback from passengers to the Round 1 proposals. Public meetings for Round 2 were held March 29 and 30. As listed below, the annual estimate savings figures are the dollar amounts that would impact Tempe's transit fund.

Approved changes for July 26, 2010:

METRO Light Rail

  • Change peak service hours FROM 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. TO 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

  • Reduce peak hour service from every 10 minutes to every 12 minutes

Local Fixed Route Arterial Bus Service

  • Eliminate service before 5 a.m. on all Tempe routes.

  • Restructure route 40 –Apache to terminate in downtown Tempe on the west end. Sky Harbor Airport would no longer be served.

  • Restructure route 66 - Mill/68th Street/Kyrene to terminate in north Tempe at McKellips and College area.  (City of Scottsdale change that may affect Tempe residents)

  • Reduce frequency on route 72 - Scottsdale/Rural to every 20 minutes during rush hour with extra trips in Tempe between downtown and Baseline.

EXPRESS Bus Service

  • Restructure route 511 to terminate at Apache and Loop 101 on the south end of the route.

  • Eliminate route 536.

Other

  • Current transit holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. New additional transit holidays will include Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Veterans Day, Day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve.  On transit holidays, bus and rail service operates on Sunday schedules. 

Know your rights under Title VI

The city of Tempe, under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and related statutes, must ensure that no person in the city of Tempe shall, on the grounds of race, color, national origin, sex, disability and age, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any federally funded program or activity it administers.   

Customer Rights and Grievances

Passengers using federally funded public transit should have equal access, seating and treatment. Complaints for non-compliance with Title VI and related statutes may be lodged with Valley Metro customer service at 602-253-5000 (TTY 602-261-8208). Complaints that customer service receives are documented and assigned to the appropriate transit staff for investigation in accordance with federal standards.  After processing the complaint, customer service will respond to the complainant and, if warranted by the investigation, take appropriate action.  The city of Phoenix Public Transit Department is responsible for monitoring this process and completed reports.

Los pasajeros que utilicen transportación pública financiado con fondos federales, tienen derecho a ser tratados con igualdad de acceso a asientos. Quejas por el incumplimiento a estos derechos bajo estatus y titulo VI deben ser presentados a Valley Metro. Servicio al cliente.. 602-253-5000 (TTY 602-261-8208). Estas quejas serán propiamente documentadas y asignadas al personal de tránsito para una investigación de conformidad bajo las leyes federales. Después de proceso de investigación el departamento de servicios al consumidor responderá a su queja, y si es requerido tomar la acción apropiada. El departamento de transporte público de la ciudad de Phoenix se hace responsable de supervisar y procesar estos informes.
