TEMPE, Ariz. –The Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave., will open a new exhibit,
From House Calls to Hospitals, that will feature the history of medicine in Tempe.
A special opening will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 and will include a presentation from Dr. Robert Kravetz, a nationally recognized author and medical historian. A retired gastroenterologist, Dr. Kravtez has edited and authored three books on Arizona medical history. He has served as a guest curator contributing to exhibits at museums throughout the state including the Heard Museum, State Capitol Museum and the Maricopa Medical Society.
Practicing medicine in Tempe has changed radically since the late 19th Century, evolving from “folk” or “home” remedies to Tempe’s first true hospital, which opened in the mid-20th Century. The exhibit will highlight medical instruments, photos and artifacts that showcase how medicine has changed over the last 200 years.
Learn about Tempe’s early residents recruiting their first trained physician, Dr. John L. Gregg, predecessor of many talented physicians. Even though Arizona was still rather remote, Valley doctors continued to follow advances in medical practice similar to their colleagues around the country.
Discover how Tempe doctors went beyond health care to make significant contributions to their community and to Arizona.
