Kid Zone started in the fall of 1985 as a pilot program serving six schools and approximately 300 children. It has since grown to serve 18 schools and over 2,500 children over the course of each school year.

Assisting the Mayor in presenting the awards were Rick Horvath, Director of School Leadership for Tempe Elementary School District #3 and Kelly Alexander, Director of Community Education and Outreach Services for Kyrene Elementary School District.
