TEMPE, Ariz. – To celebrate its designation as a 2012 Tree City USA, the City of Tempe will host its 4th Annual Arbor Day 5K at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at Giuliano Park.
Tempe was named a 2012 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the 17th year Tempe has earned the national designation.
Cities are given the distinction by achieving the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Tempe will once again celebrate this distinction and observe Arbor Day in a fun and unique way – with the 4th annual Arbor Day 5K. Activities will include an event expo, beginning at 4 p.m., and a free Kids Dash for children 10 and under, beginning at 6 p.m.
The Arbor Day 5K, presented by SRP Earthwise, is the main fundraiser for the Trees for Tempe program, which helps revitalize Tempe’s urban forest.
