On January 29, 2013 Tempe Police served six search warrants, one of which was at a Tempe business that refers to itself as a marijuana “compassion club,” called Top Shelf Hydro College, formerly called AZ Go Green. In October 2012 the Tempe Police Special Investigations Bureau began investigating this business located at 426 E. Southern Ave. after receiving several complaints from concerned residents and businesses in the area. As part of the investigation undercover detectives began purchasing quantities of marijuana at Top shelf Hydro College, which is a violation of the new medical marijuana laws.

This morning Tempe detectives served a search warrant on the business now located at 1706 E. Curry Road, Tempe and found a marijuana grow as well as a large quantity of individually wrapped amounts of marijuana.

During this investigation two houses were identified as “grow houses” in Tempe where the supply of marijuana for Top Shelf Hydro College was grown and cultivated. Two simultaneous search warrants were served by the Tempe SWAT Team on those houses where marijuana grows were also located. In total there were over 120 plants located and seized as evidence.

James Earl Chaney was also arrested at his residence in Phoenix during the service of a search warrant. Chaney is the owner and operator of Top Shelf Hydro College. Also seized during the warrants were large amounts of cash, eight guns (2 assault rifles, one shotgun, and three handguns), and 3 vehicles.

Tempe Police narcotic detectives have been working closely with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office on this investigation and are continuing to investigate. There may still be more arrests at a later time. Attached to this media release are several photos from this morning’s warrants.
