Public Outreach:

Schools:
Tempe has contracted with a local company to provide water conservation educational assemblies in all 25 of our public schools. They provide a half hour interactive shows on water conservation to grades K-6 and provide an activity book for every student. The school show and activity book are changed every year.

Events:

The City of Tempe Water Conservation Program has a booth twice a year at the Mill Avenue Festival of the Arts. The Festival allows us the opportunity to have a Conservation Booth twice a year and talk to many local residents about water conservation and our local programs. For more information on their web site http://www.tempefestivalofthearts.com.

Workshops:

The City of Tempe offers free Landscape Workshops twice a year, in the spring and fall. The workshops teach residents how to beautify their yards and conserve water through xeriscaping. Beginning in spring 2013, the workshops are being held at the newly opened SRP Center for Water Education at the Rose Eisendrath House.

The series of three workshops teaches residents how to plan, design, implement and maintain a beautifully xeriscaped yard. The workshops are held on three consecutive Saturdays, each focusing on a different phase of the process:

• April 5, 2014 – Converting your lawn to xeriscape: principles and design
• April 12, 2014 – Selecting and maintaining xeriscape plants
• April 19, 2014 – Designing, installing and maintaining drip irrigation

Workshops are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the SRP Center for Water Education at the Rose Eisendrath House, 1400 N. College Ave. Participants receive a free xeriscape workbook and brochures about conversion and design, drip irrigation and maintenance. To register, call Richard Bond at 480-350-2627.

Water Wasting Complaints:

The City of Tempe has a Water Wasting Ordinance in effect that prohibits water running off a property to a street, easement, alley or right of way. This irrigation run-off damages the streets and undermines the asphalt roadways. The ordinance does not cover waste of water on private property.

To report a water wasting issue, please call the Water Conservation Program (480) 350-2668. If you have to leave a message please include the address of the violation, when it was observed and your contact information. Your information will not be disclosed to anybody other than City Staff but will be used for follow-up information that may be needed or to inform you what has been resolved.
