CPR and First Aid

The Tempe Fire Department offers the following classes:

  • CPR For Community and Workplace

This CPR class is structured for the lay person which includes Adult CPR and Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO).  Training also includes child and infant CPR and FBAO.  (Offered in Spanish).

Class participants are required to pass a written examination.  Class time required is 3-4 hours. 

Cost:  $20.00 per person

  • CPR Pro

Adult, child, infant, one and two-rescuer CPR, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, barrier device use is taught.

There is a mandatory skills evaluation and written exam for this level of training.  Class time required is 4 hours.

Cost:  $25.00 per person

  • AED - Automatic External Defibrillator

This course includes adult one rescuer CPR, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, barrier device use and hands-on AED training.

There is a mandatory skills evaluation and written exam.  Class time required is 2 hours.

Prerequisite:  current CPR training.

Cost:  $20.00

  • First Aid - Know what to do before professional help arrives.

This course prepares the lay person by developing skills to be able to give immediate care for the injured or suddenly ill people.  This program concentrates on the first five minutes of care given until professional medical care arrives.  Topics covered in this course include:

    "The Good Samaritan Law"
       Responding to An Emergency
    Body Substance Isolation (BSI) Precautions
    Bleeding Emergencies
    Shock
    Burn Care
    Strains/Sprains
    Bone Fractures
    Medical Emergencies
    Heat and Cold Emergencies

This class is also offered in Spanish.

There will be a written examination for this course.  Class time required is 2 1/2 hours.

  • Bloodborne Pathogens - Learn how to reduce your risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens

This course teaches precautionary practices that are recommended by such organizations as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Disease control and Prevention.  Topics covered in this course include:

    Bloodborne Diseases Transmission
    Assessing Your Exposure Risk
    Body Substance Isolation (BSI)
    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    Container, Color Coding and Labels
    What to do if exposed?
    Exposure Control
    Resource List. 

Passing a written examination is required.  Class time required is 1 hour.

Cost:  $20.00 per person

American Safety and Health Institute cards are issued upon completion of each course.

Minimum of 8 students is needed to begin a class.  A television, VCR and ample room for CPR practice on manikins are required for each class.
