Crisis Avoidance Response Efforts (CARE 7)
The Crisis Avoidance Response Team is a group of dedicated and professionally
trained community members who provide 24 hour, on scene, crisis intervention services in
Tempe. The Team is called to the scene by the Tempe Fire or Police Department.
On the crisis scene, the Crisis Avoidance Response Team is able to fully focus on
the emotional and practical needs of the family and/or individual in crisis while the
Police and Fire personnel attend to law enforcement, medical emergency, and fire
suppression needs.
What is the Purpose of the Crisis Avoidance Response Team?
The Crisis Avoidance Response Team provides immediate high quality crisis
intervention, support and referral. The partnership links Fire and Police with
Social Services to provide on-scene emotional support and follow-up to community members
who have been faced with trauma.
Who is the Team Comprised Of?
There are currently 30 volunteers who provide volunteer service to the
Team. In addition, Master's of Social Work and Master's of Counseling internships
have been created in partnership with Prescott College, Ottawa University, University of
Phoenix and Arizona State University. The interns work as partners with the
community volunteers as on-scene responders.
What Does The Crisis Response Team Do?
The Crisis Avoidance Response Team is dispatched to calls through the emergency 911
system in an eight passenger van donated by the Tempe Fire Department. The Team
responds to traumatic incidents, sexual assault, homicide, bank robberies, attempted or
completed suicide, drowning, domestic violence, house fire, loss of loved ones and serious
injury accidents. Team members provide support, resources and assistance as needed.
