The Community Services Department
helps the community achieve a safe, healthy and vibrant quality of
life by providing educational, cultural, social and recreational
services. It delivers customer-focused, innovative and financially
sustainable services to diverse populations.
The department
administers the city's
volunteer
programs and
is comprised of the Library/Cultural
Services Division, which includes the
Youth
Library,
Tempe
Connections, the
History Museum
and
Tempe Center for
the Arts and the
Social
Services Division, which offers the
Kid Zone
and
CARE 7
programs and manages the multigenerational centers. Additionally, Community
Services offers a variety of programs, classes and workshops for
individuals of all ages.

Interim Community Services Manager
Kathy Berzins
Kathy Berzins began her employment 28 years ago as a recreation coordinator at the
Kiwanis Tennis Center. She also has also worked as a recreation
coordinator at Pyle Adult Center, in youth and adult sports and as a
resource coordinator, managing contracts between the city and Little
League, youth soccer leagues and numerous other outside user groups.
Kathy has worked in Tempe’s Social Services Department as the
community center coordinator at Escalante Multigenerational Center
and at the North Tempe Multigenerational Center where she was
responsible for planning and opening the center to the public. She
returned to Parks and Recreation to serve as the city’s Special
Event Supervisor before accepting the Deputy Manager of Social
Services position in November of 2007. She became the Interim
Community Services Department Manager in 2009.
