Tempe, home to a remarkable downtown and a sparkling Town Lake, has cultivated a diverse public art collection that complements the natural and built environment. The Public Art program coordinates temporary and permanent projects and collaborates with the community and design team on projects that pair artists with building and site designers. The program strives to implement new initiatives and commission artwork that engages our community and changes perceptions about public art.

Since 1988, Tempe’s Cultural Services Division has commissioned more than 70 projects and new projects are always on the horizon. The Art in Private Development ordinance, passed in 1991, has been instrumental in adding more than 100 privately-owned artworks to the city, blanketing Tempe’s 39 square miles with public art that is always accessible.
