Whether your interested in learning how to kayak for the first time, brushing up on your skills or taking your skills to the next level, we have the class for you! The City of Tempe offers several kayaking opportunities for youth and adults as well as novices and experienced paddlers.

Adult Classes

Kayak Fitness
This is a perfect class for beginners or experienced kayakers. Class will include stretching, warm-ups and on-the-water fitness exercises with a focus on the basic strokes and maneuvers and training in kayaks. Kayaks, personal floatation devices and paddles are provided. Fee: $70. 480-350-8069

Essentials of Kayak Touring 

This class is taught by ACA certified kayak instructors and the program includes an introduction to kayak touring and on-the-water safety and rescues. There will be a focus on fitness, boat handling and stroke technique. All necessary equipment will be provided. No experience necessary. Fee $80 480-350-8069

Kayak Trip to Roosevelt Lake 
Take what you learned in Essentials of Kayak Touring on this self-sustained overnight trip to Roosevelt Lake. We meet on May 10th to cover trip planning and logistics and learn how to properly pack your kayak. Register early; space is limited and this trip will fill up quickly. You may register for this class prior to finishing Essentials of Kayak Touring, but the coach needs to sign off on your skills and ability. All necessary boating equipment provided. 480-350-8069

Moonlight Kayak
Spend an enjoyable evening on Tempe Town Lake while paddling in the moonlight. No experience necessary. Bring clothes that you don’t mind getting wet, a towel, dry clothes, and prepare to howl at the moon. Kayaks, equipment and personal floatation devices will be provided. Must be 18 years or older to participate. Fee: $30 per person. 480-350-8069

Glow Paddle

Wildest and Brightest Glow Paddle on Tempe Town Lake! Join us for a night under the stars while we GLOW and glide across the water. In addition to all necessary kayaking equipment participants will receive glow in the dark accessories to wear while we paddle. Feel free to wear other glow in the dark clothing items or accessories that you don’t mind getting wet. Age 10 and up welcome (age 10-17 must be accompanied by an adult).

Youth Kayaking
Whether you are looking for a class that will prepare your son/daughter for a family kayaking trip or an opportunity for them to learn a new sport, this class is for you. Our ACA certified instructors will focus on stroke technique, fitness specific to kayaking and on-the-water training in kayaks. Youth must be between the ages of 10 and 18 to participate. What to Bring and Wear for a Paddling Day 

What to wear:
Clothing that the participants do not mind getting wet.
Some sort of water shoes or sneakers the participants do not mind getting wet. Sandals are permissible as long as they are not open back, flip-flop type sandals.
Hats or Visors
Loose fitting comfortable t-shirt. Depending on the participants sun tolerance they may want to wear an SPF coated top shirt, or a long sleeve t-shirt.
If a participant wants to wear long pants, it is permissible, however they should not be cotton or denim, they should be Polyester or Lycra.
Not Allowed:  Jeans of any kind, including Jean shorts
Long pants that are non-athletic type pants; jeans, cotton or corduroy are not allowed. Hiking boots or dress shoes
