High technology is an important part of the economic mix in
Tempe. About 10,800 people are employed by this industry in Tempe, about 30
percent more than the metropolitan area, according to the Greater Phoenix
Economic Council.
 Companies
such as Motorola and are distinctly present in Tempe. Chip
manufacturing and the research to continue creating new and better products
are strong employment centers for Tempe.
Companies such as Insight Computers, Avnet and others
train tomorrow’s leaders in the community through outreach programs and
internships. With Arizona State University within minutes of their
facilities, a plethora of young, educated workers are available. About 15 percent of Tempe’s workforce has an advanced degree – a Master’s degree
or better.
ASU provides a number of benefits to technology companies.
Beyond training employees and creating an educated labor pool, ASU is the
state’s technology transfer leader. More than 4,000 patents have been issued
with Tempe as the inventor city.
The ASU Research Park, the worldwide corporate training
headquarters for ASML, provides companies all the benefits of being in a
corporate park with the advantages of being near a university. Tenants may
utilize ASU library and laboratory resources as part of their agreement.
Five freeways, Sky Harbor just minutes away, and a great
mass transit system all make Tempe a great place for technology businesses.
