Recreation Classes - Fall 2009

Get Movin'
Individuals with intellectual disabilities are invited to have fun and get fit to a variety of music while exploring different forms of dance and movement.  Individuals must be independently mobile to participate.  Those needing extra supervision must provide his or her own aide.

Friday Night Dances & Game Nights

Fabulous Friday Dances
6:30-9pm, $4 admission
(includes drinks, snacks, entry for door prize drawing)

Dances are held on the second Friday of each month for individuals with disabilities ages 13 years and older.

Upcoming dances and themes:

September 11 - sports fan frenzy
October 9 - spook or be spooked!
November 13 - space, the final frontier
December 11 - winter wonderland

Friday Night Bingo/Game Night
6:30-8pm, $3 admission

Bingo/Game Night is held the first Friday of the month for individuals of all ages with disabilities.  Those requiring assistance must come with own aide.

October 2 - bingo
November 6 - game night
December 4 - bingo

Dances and Bingo/Game Nights are held at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, 655 E. Southern Ave., Tempe (SW corner of Rural Rd. and Southern Ave.).

LEAP After School Program

Offered by the City of Tempe, the Life Skill Enrichment After School Program
is for teens receiving Special Education services who attend Mt. Point, Tempe H.S., Corona, McClintock or Marcos de Niza during the 2009-2010 school year.

The program’s primary focus is life skill enrichment for teens attending in the Tempe Unified School District, with the exception of Desert Vista H.S.  The program is held at Marcos De Niza High School and will involve many activities, some of which include soccer, Frisbee, card games and board games.  Students may occasionally take off-site trips in a City of Tempe vehicle (permission from parents/guardians required). 

Program begins Monday, August 10, and is from 2:45-6pm and is for the entire 2009-10 school year.  Late registration is accepted, but you must contact coordinator.  For more information about the program and how to register please contact Josh Bell at 480.858.2469.

Camp Challenge/Camp Action Kids

This summer day camp is for children and adults ages 5-22 with developmental disabilities. Campers will participate in a variety of fun activities: arts and crafts, games, swimming, music, field trips, and bowling, as well as many other adventures. Camp is located at Bustoz Elementary School during the months of June and July.

Check back as we get closer to camp dates in Summer of 2010 for more information! 

 

Unified Bowling/Buddy Bowling League

This is a fun unified sports program that provides a great way for athletes with and without disabilities to participate together.  Download registration form here.  If you are interested in Special Olympics bowling, please see the Special Olympics section below.

Location: AMF Tempe Village Lanes
4407 S. Rural Rd.
Date/Time: 9:30am, Saturdays, September 12 - November 21
Who: 7+ years
Bowling Fee: $8 each week for 3 games, shoes and league prizes ($2 each week if absent)
Registration Fee: $20
