Hometown for All, an innovative initiative approved by the Tempe City Council in January 2021, accelerates the growth of affordable housing through a sustainable funding stream. The initiative ensures that Tempe can create the next generation of affordable and workforce housing opportunities in the city.

The initiative, introduced by Mayor Corey Woods, reflects the city's desire to ensure that Tempe has a variety of housing types for anyone who wants to live here.

Private property owners are regularly developing market-rate infill housing in Tempe and that will continue. At the same time, Hometown for All is creating new affordable options.

Dedicated funding source

For every development project built in Tempe, an amount equivalent to 50% of certain permitting fees paid to the city's General Fund supports affordable and workforce housing. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit Tempe Coalition for Affordable Housing leverages these funds for:

  • Acquisition – Permanently affordable homes, apartments, condos
  • Land purchased - Partnerships to develop affordable/workforce housing
  • Redevelopment - Reimagined city-owned properties

Voluntary contributions

Voluntary contributions are welcome from developers and other entities to fund affordable housing in Tempe. All donations support the nonprofit Tempe Coalition for Affordable Housing and are tax deductible. Find a pledge card here (PDF).
